Mouth cancer is highly treatable if detected early. At The Cosmetic Dental Gallery, we take a proactive approach to mouth cancer and include a screening as part of your routine dental check-up.

We also help our patients understand their risks for mouth cancer and how to recognise the warning signs at home.

How does my dentist screen for mouth cancer?

Your dentist will look carefully at the insides of your cheeks, gums, tongue, the roof of your mouth, and toward the back of your throat for any signs of mouth cancer.

What are the signs of mouth cancer?

  • A lump or growth in your mouth
  • Loose teeth
  • Mouth sores that won’t go away and bleed
  • Red or white spots along the gums or somewhere else in your mouth
  • Mouth, cheek, or ear discomfort
  • Hoarseness that won’t go away
  • Difficulty swallowing

Who is most at risk for mouth cancer?

Mouth cancer can affect anyone at any age, but typically affects older adults between the ages of 50-74. Men are more at risk than women. Lifestyle and genetics also affect your risk level. If you use tobacco products or drink excessive amounts of alcohol, you are more at risk.

If your family has a history of papillomavirus infections, you also have a greater risk of developing mouth cancer.

What preventative measures can I take?

Avoiding or limiting your use of tobacco products and curbing your drinking habits can diminish your odds of contracting mouth cancer.
